Aila & Determination
Perfectly Awkward Tales is a series of girl-powered fairy tale adventures, where self-acceptance is the hero. All 3 books in the series have won a Mom's Choice Gold Award for excellence in family-friendly products.
Aila is thirteen years old, an orphan with no one in the world but her baby sister, Maisie. But Maisie has disappeared. Stolen by powerful fairies from the Land of Sidh. When Aila begins the impossible journey to find her, she discovers the power of her gift. Determination.
Aila’s story goes way back to one of the oldest Scottish tales, from before the time of King Arthur (400 A.D.). Though this story has been told for thousands of years, the heroine never had a name. Storytellers performed the tale at celebrations. The heroine’s name changed with each performance, depending upon the person being honored at the feast.
We felt such a brave heroine should have her own name: Aila, a Scottish name that means “from a strong place.” Her gift is determination—the power to see things through.
We can build determination just like building muscles. Every time we face a challenge or try something new, our brains create new pathways. Whether we succeed or not, we get smarter just by trying. That’s why people who don’t give up eventually succeed. It may take 10,000 tries, but eventually they get there.
Many new inventions, like x-rays and the microwave oven, were discovered by mistake. Don't get discouraged if something doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. Try again or find a new way to do it. Have fun learning as much from what doesn’t work, as from what does.
